What is it? An online newspaper article from the New York Times.

Publication Information: The New York Times.  Published on January 27, 2009.

Support:  Arne Duncan, Education Secretary.  Representative George Miller, Democrat of California and chairman of the House of education committee.  Edward Kealy, director of the Committee for Education Funding.  Joel Packer , a lobbyist for the National Education Association.  Together the sources through this article are mainly taken from the supporting side of the stimulus package.  A reference is made to the republican opposition but no direct quotes are taken from anyone.  A lack of opposing view hurt this article and limited its strength.

Source Analysis:  This is left-wing newspaper writing more for democrats than for republicans.  Although they never directly say such in the stance of the New York Times, through a great deal of editorial/opinion writing you begin to see some trends in their style—LEFT! The audience is huge and the newspaper is on a very large stage as the New York Times is distributed nationally and is wire-tapped for stories in other papers who don’t have the funds to cover all of the mainstream stories that the NYT does.

Usefulness:  This article is helpful in getting a better understanding of the Obama administration’s plans with the stimulus program and the reactions of the people in the educator positions around the United States.  After doing research on the programs already being implemented across the nations, I am glad to get an inside scoop of the money placement and what stipulations are being put on it.  Sadly, I found no restrictions besides small divisions of funds such as construction and Title I.  I am beginning to draw more relationships as I go here.  The problem I am seeing in addressing the problem of teacher retention in inner city schools is perhaps the idea that not restricting where the funds can be spent actually doesn’t improve very much at all.  Perhaps this issue will grow over time but this article has pointed me in the direction of looking for past packages thrown into education (at the state level since this looks to be the first federally controlled package) and the affects such money had with control over its allocation and no control of its allocation.  The stimulus package looks to be the solution to the teacher retention problem and the education system as a whole.  I don’t see a lot of structure for the funds which is kind of scary considering that the Federal Government stepping in with a stimulus package is usually a short-term answer.  This was a good article with all the prior knowledge of the programs that exist and the idea that funding any of those programs (the best of them of course) could perhaps be more beneficial to the education system as a whole.

Works Cited:  I got this information by looking for the current education trend of the stimulus package on Google.  This is the article that immediately popped up and of course it is because the New York Times is one of the leading papers in the online world.
